Charter of Township of Treasurer - More About
By statutory authority the township treasurer is required to receive and
take charge of all funds belonging to the township or which are required by
law to be paid into the township treasury, and to pay over and account for
the funds according to law or township board decision. Further, the treasurer is the township’s agent for collecting taxes, sewer and water
connection and tap-in fees, issues refunds and makes transfers to the general fund as provided by law. Some other duties and responsibilities of the treasurer are defined by state statues and include, but are not limited to:
Collects
real and personal property taxes;
Keeps and account of township receipts (revenues) and expenditures;
Issues township checks;
Deposits township revenues in approved depositories;
Invests township funds in approved investment vehicles;
Collects delinquent personal property taxes; and
Responsible for jeopardy assessments in collecting property taxes;
It is very important that the township treasurer diligently maintain accurate records of all revenue and disbursements promptly deposit all receipts in the township depositories and invest idle funds in proper savings accounts or government bonds.
