Township Departments

The Department of Public Works is a combined departmental operation that provides high quality water service for residential, commercial and industrial use including fire protection. The Department also provides for safe and efficient collection and transport of all wastewater from properties connected to the sewer system through the use of hundreds of miles of sanitary sewer line and pumping stations. The Parks & Grounds Maintenance division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all township buildings, grounds, bike paths and cemeteries. The Department of Public Works (DPW) currently has 30 employees. Their positions and duties are as follows:

One Superintendent – Supervises all personnel within the Department of Public Works, as well as supervises crew leaders, oversees project bids, attends Township and Engineering meetings;

One Assistant Superintendent - Oversees daily operations;

Eight Construction Department - Repairs water main breaks, stop boxes and sanitary sewer problems;

Two Inspectors - Monitor installation of underground utilities;

One Paving Inspector - Oversees all new construction and paving repairs;

Five Meter Department – New meter installations and meter repairs, winter turn offs, new construction turn ons;

Nine Parks & Grounds Maintenance – Maintains all parks and park activities, all township grounds and buildings, equipment, cemeteries, snow plowing, brush removal;

Four Utility Billing – Water & sewer billing, new customers, dispatch crews for DPW related problems or activity. The Utility division also maintains all reservations for park pavilion rentals, building rentals, picnic table rentals, tent rentals, etc. (click here for forms)

The Township also owns and maintains two cemeteries:

  1. Hart Cemetery (aka Chesterfield Cemetery)
    (On Chesterfield Road just North of 24 Mile Road)

  2. Union Cemetery
    (On Fairchild Road just North of 23 Mile Road)

The Department of Public Works offers brush removal every other Monday and can handle up to a 4” diameter branch. You can call (586) 949-0400, then enter 3.

Chesterfield Township offers two boat launches:

  1. Brandenburg Memorial Park
    (On Jefferson, just South of 23 Mile Road)

  2. Department of Natural Resources
    (Off Rosso Hwy, South of 21 Mile Road)
