The following information is normally needed to obtain a building permit for a single family dwelling. Other building permits may require more or less information.

  1. A complete BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATION form showing

    1. A detailed site diagram with Proposed Grade.
    2. Owner/Contractor/Job site/Cost Information.

  2. HOMEOWNERS AFFIDAVIT. Homeowner completes form if taking out permit stating homeowner is responsible for permit.

    OR

    CONTRACTOR'S LICENSE. Builders must be licensed by the State and register with Township.

  3. TWO SETS OF FOLDED PLANS (FOUR SETS OF SEALED PLANS FOR COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL) TO SCALE. (One set will be returned to be kept on the job site.) INCLUDE IN THE PLANS:

    1. Foundations;
    2. All significant elevations (side view);
    3. Floor Plans;
    4. Cross section of one wall from footing to peak; and,
    5. Identify north elevation as (N). Be sure to show all dimensions.

  4. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PERMIT is necessary for a septic system.

  5. If your building site is on a WATER or SEWER LINE, see the Charter Township of Chesterfield Water Department for the fees required. Additional fees for water hook up must be paid to Charter Township of Chesterfield.

  6. DPW PERMITS for sewer connect must be taken out with building permit.

  7. DRIVEWAY PERMIT. Call the Macomb County Road Commission for a permit for the installation of a culvert or a waiver.

  8. TRUSS DIAGRAMS. If house plans call for engineered trusses, you must secure and submit engineer approved drawings from your truss supplier, sealed and signed.

  9. ENERGY CODE CALCULATIONS. State law requires a minimum level of energy efficiency and the calculations to verify it. This information is usually secured from the supplier of lumber and windows.

  10. PROOF OF OWNERSHIP. A deed or land contract and evidence (Permanent Parcel Number) that your parcel has been legally recorded with the County and Chesterfield Township.

  11. SOIL EROSION PERMIT. The County may require that you obtain a soil erosion and sedimentation control permit. If your jobsite is within 500 feet of a lake or stream check Flood plain map..

    **Be advised that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources regulates construction in wetlands and floodplain. Permits may or may not be required. If in doubt, contact the DNR.

  12. When you have the information required above, a permit may be obtained by contacting our office at (586) 949-0400.

  13. Permits are valid for ONE YEAR ONLY. A permit is considered abandoned if work is suspended or has not begun for any six consecutive months.

  14. Please note that all INSPECTIONS should be requested at least 24 hours in advance to insure that they can be completed in a timely manner.

    BUILDING inspections are generally conducted between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

    PLUMBING and MECHANICAL inspections are generally conducted between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

    ELECTRICAL inspections are generally conducted between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

    ** Please note that any special inspections are available at a cost of $35.00 per inspection on non-permit items and pre-inspection requests.
